Cantonese Opera

Cantonese Opera and traditional folk songs would have been a popular pastime for Chinese Canadians when they were not working. Many men joined together in musical societies to play instruments and sing, and like watching television or movies for people today, the storylines of popular operas and songs would have been well known among many people. Singing songs together and reciting poetry provided a way to come together and have fun. Cantonese Opera also provided a link to home, and Chinese Canadians in small towns would pool money together to pay for travelling troupes to travel from China to tour and perform for them.
