Paper Families/ Chain Migration
Like the links of a chain, Chinese migrated all over the world following family and relatives. Sons followed fathers, nephews followed uncles, cousins followed cousins, wives joined husbands. Family members helped each other with advice, finding jobs and loaning money to help them get started. They also provided strong support so that a migrant did not feel alone. Those who were not relatives by blood could be adopted into these family ties, so that an older man who was helpful was called an “uncle” and soon was treated as if he was an uncle by blood.
