Because of a long history of racism, discrimination, and white supremacy in Canada, many people who helped build Canada were forgotten or ignored. Theirs are 'uncommon histories' because they have not been valued as much as they should. But they are an integral part of Canada. The lives of Chinese Canadians fit into a history that is common to all of us. After crossing the Pacific Ocean, they lived and worked with First Nations and aboriginal peoples and with other migrants from across the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans. The intelligence, discipline, and hard work of Chinese Canadians helped build Canada and are part of our common past. Their grocery stores, laundries, and cafés seemed to be around every corner in all our towns and cities. Their farms and restaurants fed us. Their long struggle against racism forced us to live up to our ideals and made a better nation. Their dreams and sacrifices inspire us. Their stories are our story.
