Remembering the Chinese Head Tax: Teaching and Learning Chinese Canadian History Workshops

June, 2010 - March, 2012
Vancouver, BC
Project Details

The University of British Columbia (UBC) and its partner, the Initiative for Student Teaching and Research in Chinese Canadian Studies (INSTRCC), will undertake a project to directly engage a young generation of Chinese-Canadian students with members of their community, particularly elders, to conduct, through a series of four workshops and two symposia, oral history research and create and preserve the history and experiences of Chinese-Canadians between 1885 and 1947 under the Chinese Head Tax and the Chinese Immigration Act. The students will use the recently digitized Head Tax Registers Database at Library and Archives Canada as the digital spine for research on early Chinese migration to Canada. All historical materials created from this project will be accessible to the public as part of the University's library collections for generations to come.
